As practitioners of microservices architecture, Afterman Software recently converted our site from a traditional CMS to a Headless CMS called Kentico Cloud. This upgrade provides us with the agility we are accustomed to when working with microservices and lays the groundwork for many future enhancements to our website.

Since converting our site to leverage Kentico Cloud, we have been able to rapidly develop new landing pages, reuse content and integrate our site with our CRM.

Kentico Cloud has been a significant boost to our online presence and the experience has inspired us to compile a list of the benefits your organization will experience by converting your online presence to the headless CMS Kentico Cloud.

1. No longer wasting valuable time on maintaining a monolithic CMS system

Kentico takes care of maintaining the content platform and your team is no longer burdened with this time consuming process. Your team can maintain components of your system on a schedule that is compatible with your marketing objectives. Web developers can spend the time gained building enhancements or implementing your wireframes. They will be happier and so will you.

2. Enhancements to your online presence will be agile and incremental without introducing risk of instability or performance issues

A headless solution is decomposed into separate components that can be worked on and deployed in an agile way. Keeping the components small and contained means that when the smaller components are deployed there is less risk that the overall system will have a failure. This reduced risk along with deployment automation tools mean that you can publish new functionality as it is ready and not wait for periodic release days.

3. Marketers no longer need to spending time building pages and other tasks better suited to web developers

Since your web developers are not spending valuable time upgrading the platform or pushing features into a resistant CMS they can spend time converting your wireframe and content into a working online presence.

Traditional CMS promote the idea of empowering marketers with drag and drop page layouts, but the reality is that these features rarely work well in real life and add an additional burden on marketers. Marketers should be empowered to do marketing tasks, not web developer tasks.

4. No more big bang upgrades to the CMS platform

The traditional CMS requires everything to be upgraded at the same time. This includes the platform, any plugins you use and fixes to breaking changes. This is a risky and expensive process that distracts from your business goals. The tendency is to defer upgrades which means you are missing out on enhanced features and increasing the risk that your site will be hacked.

5. The ability to pick and choose components that work well

With a traditional CMS you are limited to specific plugins or vendor provided components for features they support. If there is a component that works better for your needs, you may not be able to use it.

For example, you are free to pick or switch search providers for your site. You are no longer limited to what the CMS platform offers.

6. Innovative features are significantly easier to implement outside of a traditional CMS

This means your site can be an innovative forerunner instead of always trying to keep up with the pack. Often getting innovative features to work within a CMS is the biggest challenge. With headless, there is no need to push that feature into a restrictive CMS platform and your developers are not limited by the platform.

7. Your content is no longer tightly coupled with your visualization

With headless you edit and maintain content in a structure that is separate from the visualizations and you can easily reuse, reskin or leverage your content in multiple channels. It also means you no longer need to maintain multiple copies of the same content for different channels which saves time and ensure your audiences receive a consistent message.

8. That new landing page or website overhaul does not need to wait for the developers to finish before you can work on the content

Since the content lives separate from the visualization, your content editors can start right away. This compresses the schedule significantly and reduces the end of project stress

We hope you find this list helpful in your quest to be more productive and agile with your online presence. Please feel free to reach out to us to hear more about our experience with headless CMS. As Kentico Cloud partners we welcome the opportunity to share our experience and possibly help you put together a POC so that your team can gain experience with headless CMS.
